The State Trio FORTE TRIO Presented Kazakhstan’s Musical Culture in Ottawa

The Rosa Baglanova State Academic Concert Organization “Qazaqconcert”, in cooperation with Associazione Culturale Januartes, held a concert by the State Trio “FORTE TRIO” on December 19, 2025, in Ottawa, Canada, at the Carleton Dominion Centre Concert Hall.

The concert program in Ottawa was built on the principle of stylistic and cultural dialogue. It featured Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Elegiac Trio No. 1 in G minor and Anton Arensky’s Trio in D minor — compositions that reveal the expressive potential of the classical chamber form of the late nineteenth century. The European tradition was complemented by works connected with national themes, including A. Zhaiym’s symphonic poem “Korogly” and Astor Piazzolla’s tango “Spring”.

A special place in the program was given to Kazakh folk themes presented in contemporary academic interpretations. The audience heard the Kazakh folk song “Yapurai” arranged by A. Tolukpayev, as well as “An Shashu”, a medley based on Kazakh folk themes arranged by I. Bashkatov. These works allowed listeners to appreciate the richness of Kazakhstan’s folklore heritage as expressed through chamber ensemble performance and contemporary compositional thinking.

Such a program concept presented Kazakhstan’s musical culture as an equal part of the global artistic process, distinguished by its unique timbral color, rhythmic freedom, and expressive melody.

The concert was attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Canada, Dauletbek Kusainov, highlighting the cultural and diplomatic significance of the event.

FORTE TRIO members:

Timur Urmancheyev — piano, Artistic Director of the ensemble, Honored Worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan, professor, recipient of the “Kurmet” Order;

Maksat Dzhusupov — violin, laureate of international competitions and recipient of the Prize of the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan;

Murat Narbekov — cello, laureate of international competitions and recipient of the Prize of the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

FORTE TRIO’s performance in Ottawa became a significant event in the cultural relations between Kazakhstan and Canada and a convincing example of how chamber music can serve as an instrument of intercultural dialogue while revealing national artistic identity.
